The Tenerife Auditorium and Opera House, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is one of Spain’s most recognisable cultural landmarks and a prominent example of contemporary architecture.
The building serves both as a symphonic auditorium and an opera venue, providing a permanent home for the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra while hosting a wide range of cultural performances.
Its distinctive architectural identity is defined by large-scale reinforced concrete structures, including the main dome and an iconic cantilevered roof that has become one of the most recognisable features of the Canary Islands skyline
The building has three signature elements: the wings, the shell, and the sails. The main section of the building has a 50 feet high platform roof flanked by two 200 feet high, white concrete, cone- shaped arches. Two conical, double curvature concrete sails that develop into a 170 feet high, 20 inch thick dome enclose the symphony hall. A third arch shields the south entrance and creates a balcony that overlooks the ocean.
And, from the arch, a massive two-sided wing rises over the shell, comes to rest at the shell’s 170 feet top point and cantilevers over and back another 185 feet, molding into one inverted curved tip.
