Barcelona Desalination Plant
Barcelona, Spain
Desalination
Project type
200,000 m³/day
Daily capacity
The Barcelona Desalination Plant project comprised the design, construction, and two-year operation of the largest desalination facility in Europe supplying potable water directly to the public distribution network.
The plant was delivered within a record timeframe, under conditions of extreme drought and near-restriction levels, requiring meticulous planning and highly efficient technical solutions. Among these, the project featured an innovative seawater intake system, using long-distance pipelines towed afloat from Norway and installed at significant depth.
The facility incorporates a comprehensive and highly flexible treatment system, designed to adapt to varying operational conditions. Despite the technical complexity and accelerated execution schedule, the project was awarded Best Desalination Plant in the World in 2009 by the prestigious Global Water Intelligence, competing against benchmark facilities in China and the Middle East.
