Located at the heart of the City of London ’s financial district, Bank Station is one of the capital’s most important transport hubs and a strategically critical piece of infrastructure for urban mobility and the UK economy. It is a key interchange station for Transport for London (TfL), used by more than 100,000 passengers, accounting for nearly 400,000 journeys per weekday, particularly during peak hours.

The efficient operation of Bank Station is essential for both the London Underground (LU) and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) networks. Within this context, the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade (BSCU) project was conceived to significantly improve accessibility, passenger circulation,and interchange, delivering a 45% increase in capacity during peak hours while substantially reducing journey times.

The project includes a new passenger entrance on Cannon Street, with lift and escalator connections, fully step-free access, moving walkways, a new Northern line ticket hall, new southbound Northern line running tunnels and platforms, as well as new internal passenger connections between Underground lines.

These improvements have enabled:

Support for the economic growth of the City of London.

·

Reduced passenger journey times through the station.

·

Relief of chronic congestion and an improved passenger environment.

·

Step-free routes from street level to Northern line trains and between the Northern line and the DLR.

·

Removal of speed restrictions, directly reducing journey times on the Northern line.

·

Creation of opportunities for secondary revenue generation.

 

The project involved significant technical and organizational challenges, including construction within a highly sensitive urban environment surrounded by some of the world’s most valuable and heritage-rich buildings, working adjacent to operational assets such as the Central line, complex coordination with multiple internal and external stakeholders, and strict budgetary and program constraints.

The project was completed in February 2023.

Innovative Contractor Engagement (ICE)

The BSCU project was the first London Underground project delivered under the Innovative Contractor Engagement (ICE) model. This approach enabled the base design to be developed in order to:

Significantly increase station capacity.

·

Reduce journey times.

·

Minimize disruption to services during construction.

·

Shorten the program by 10 months.

·

Reduce the planned Northern line closure by five weeks.

·

Improve the cost–benefit ratio by 45%.

·

Reduce the overall project cost.

Through this collaborative approach, DRAGADOS, working in full alliance with London Underground, delivered £60 million in savings to the client through innovative technical solutions.

The project was recognized with the‘Constructing Excellence Integration and Collaborative Working Award’in 2014.
