The design and construction contract for the North West Rail Link project in Sydney involved the delivery of one of Australia’s most significant metropolitan rail expansions.
The project included the construction of two twin tunnels, each 15.5 km long with an internal diameter of 6.17 m, running between the existing Epping station and the new Bella Vista station. In addition, five underground stations were built—Cherrybrook, Castle Hill, Showground, Norwest, and Bella Vista—each with approximate dimensions of 180 m in length and 20 m in width.

The works were completed with two service shafts located at Epping and Cheltenham, 59 cross passages, a crossover cavern at Castle Hill measuring 184 m in length, 21 m in width, and 14 m in height, as well as two mined tunnels, each 300 m long, connecting the Epping shaft with the existing Epping station.
Approximately 70% of the line tunnels were excavated through sandstone formations of the Hawkesbury and Mittagong units, while the remaining sections passed through competent shale from the Ashfield formation. Excavation was carried out primarily using four double-shield tunnel boring machines, with an excavation diameter of 6.99 m.









Cross passages were excavated simultaneously with tunnel excavation using small excavators. This concurrent workflow was made possible through the use of mobile platforms that allowed equipment to cross safely, reducing interference and improving overall efficiency.
