The Palisades Tunnel is a key component of the Hudson Tunnel Project, a strategic infrastructure programme designed to increase rail capacity along the United States Northeast Corridor and strengthen connections

The project involves the construction of two parallel railway tunnels beneath the Palisades cliffs, forming the first excavated section of a new rail link that will ultimately connect with Penn Station beneath the Hudson River.


Dragados is carrying out the works using two state-of-the-art hard rock tunnel boring machines excavating through Palisades Diabase, one of the hardest rock formations currently being tunnelled in North America.
The development also includes cross passages, a major retrieval shaft and associated railway infrastructure aimed at increasing the capacity and resilience of one of the country’s most important rail corridors.
