Construction procedure
The Gordie Howe International Bridge will be the longest cable-stayed bridge span in North America, with a central span of 2,799 ft, providing a new strategic connection between Canada and the United States across the Detroit River. The structure is supported by two main towers located respectively in Windsor (Canada) and Detroit (United States), strengthening cross-border connectivity between both countries.

The deck accommodates two separate roadways, one in each direction, with three traffic lanes and shoulders, as well as a dedicated shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians. The superstructure consists of a system of longitudinal and transverse steel girders, supporting a concrete deck slab that forms the riding surface. The entire structure is supported by 54 pairs of stay cables, which transfer loads to the main towers.




The towers, rising over 656 ft in height, are constructed in reinforced concrete and feature an A-shaped configuration, culminating in a vertical upper section where the stay cable anchorage systems are located.
In addition to the main cable-stayed span, the project includes two approach viaducts, measuring 4,649 ft and 5,866 ft in length, ensuring seamless integration with the road networks on both sides of the border.
