Construction procedure
The Gordie Howe International Bridge is be the longest cable-stayed bridge span in North America, with a central span of 2,799 ft, providing a new strategic connection between Canada and the United States across the Detroit River. The structure is supported by two main towers located respectively in Windsor (Canada) and Detroit (United States), strengthening cross-border connectivity between both countries.







The towers, rising over 200 m in height, are constructed in reinforced concrete and feature an A-shaped configuration, culminating in a vertical upper section where the stay cable anchorage are located.
The bridge is more than 2.5 km long because, in addition to the cable-stayed section, there are two approach viaducts, 432 m long on the Canadian side and 543 m in the United States, which guarantee the integration of the bridge into the road networks of both countries.
The construction of the deck began with the retention spans, whose metal structure was placed on temporary shoring towers with the help of large cranes from the ground. The central span was then executed using the cantilever method with a crane located at the end of the built deck that moved as the construction progressed. The load-bearing and retaining stays were installed and tensioned as the central span progressed.
