The Rande Bridge Widening, naugurated in 1981, represented the world’s first major widening of a cable-stayed bridge, increasing the capacity of one of the key transport links in north-west Spain.

The project added two new side carriageways to the existing structure, enhancing traffic flow along the AP 9 motorway while maximising the reuse of the original bridge.

The bridge deck cross-section consists of two parallel wide box girders, connected approximately every 36.09 ft by delta beams, which serve as the anchoring elements for the stay cables. The cables are arranged centrally between the box girders and in paired configurations, optimizing structural performance and load distribution.
