The Barajas Airport Terminal T4, designed by architect Richard Rogers in collaboration with Estudio Lamela, is one of Europe’s most iconic airport infrastructures. Conceived to serve 35 million passengers per year, the terminal is capable of handling up to 10,400 passengers at peak times, combining operational efficiency with architectural quality.

The complex is organized into three large parallel sections, oriented along a south–north axis:

The check-in building, measuring 1,148 ft in length and 187 ft in width, with 174 check-in counters.

The processor building, housing 18 security control points.

·

The pier building, with a length of 3,747 ft and a width of 128 ft, equipped with 37 passenger boarding bridges.

The terminal comprises three underground levels and three above-ground levels, unified by a continuous roof of 1,614,587 ft2 shared by all three sections. Its distinctive undulating form, reminiscent of a seagull’s wing, is complemented by large overhangs that reinforce the architectural identity of the complex.

The facade, extending over 9,482 ft with a surface area of 430,556 ft2, is resolved through a cable-stayed curtain wall, providing transparency and visual lightness. The three sections are separated by generous spaces known as “light canyons”, rising 49 ft in height, which allow natural light to penetrate all levels and significantly enhance passenger comfort and orientation.
