Puerta de Atocha Station is Madrid’s main railway hub and one of the most important transport interchanges in Spain. It connects commuter, regional,and long-distance rail services, as well as the High-Speed Rail network, linking Madrid with cities such as Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia.

Originally designed for a capacity of 16 million passengers per year, the station required a comprehensive expansion and modernization following the 2004 terrorist attacks and in response to a projected demand of 36 million passengers per year by 2025. The project addressed both capacity enhancement and the improvement of passenger flow,safety,and operational efficiency.

DRAGADOS applied its experience in the construction of major transport infrastructures—particularly large airport terminals—to increase pedestrian capacity and effectively segregate departure and arrival flows. The works included the demolition of certain existing platforms, the construction of a new elevated arrivals hall, and its connection to the platforms through new escalators, stairways, and elevators. The lower level was reorganized as a departures-only area, while the arrivals hall was connected to the renovated main concourse via a 656 ft-long covered moving walkway.

One of the project’s main challenges was the intervention on the main canopy,located above 11 High-Speed Rail tracks in full operation. DRAGADOS designed, developed, and constructed a temporary support structure that enabled the demolition and replacement of the existing canopy without affecting the track or catenary systems, ensuring uninterrupted High-Speed Rail and conventional rail services throughout the works.

The new high canopy consists of 42 hyperbolic paraboloid modules, rising 65.62 ft above the platforms serving 13 long-distance tracks. Each module measures 57.94 ft transversely and 54.46 ft longitudinally, forming a roof structure 326.77 ft parallel to the tracks and 405.58 ft transversely, supported by 42 circular steel columns with a 3.28 ft diameter and 45.93 ft height.

Among the railway works carried out, the conversion of four tracks to international gauge and the raising of platforms to comply with current European standards are particularly noteworthy.
