The Barcelona Metro Lines 9 and 10 project is one of Europe’s most innovative urban railway developments, based on the Continuous Station Concept, which integrates stations and tunnels within a single large-diameter structure.

DRAGADOS has participated in the construction of several sections of the Lines 9 and 10, a landmark project that incorporates the Continuous Station Concept. The company has delivered three separate contracts covering the sections Gorg – Sagrera Shaft, Sagrera Shaft – Habaneras Extraction Shaft, and Zona Franca – Mandri Station, the latter currently under construction.

The technical solution developed for this project is based on the excavation of a single large-diameter tunnel, with an internal diameter of 10.90 m, accommodating four tracks arranged on two levels, with unidirectional operation on each level. Stations are accessed through vertical shafts connected directly to the tunnel, where one track per level is replaced by the station platform. This approach eliminates the need to enlarge the tunnel section excavated by the TBM, optimizing both construction efficiency and design.

The alignments corresponding to contracts 1 and 2 were excavated using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines, operating in pressurized mode due to the presence of non-cohesive soils and to prevent groundwater inflow. Contract 3 crosses areas with both soft soils and hard, massive granite formations and is also being excavated with an EPB TBM, with the operating mode adapted to the specific geotechnical conditions of each section.

The tunnel lining consists of precast reinforced concrete segmental rings, composed of seven segments per ring, with a thickness of 40 cm and a length of 1.80 m. A universal ring configuration has been adopted to accommodate the curvature of the alignment.

For the execution of the project, two EPB tunnel boring machines with a diameter of 12.05 m have been used, which represented a world record in 2002 at the time of commissioning.
