The Crossrail C305 project was the largest contract awarded within the Crossrail Project and one of the largest infrastructure contracts in Europe at the time.

The works involved the construction of twin tunnels lined with precast, fibre-reinforced reinforced concrete segments, using four Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines. Excavation was carried out mainly through London Clay formations.

A key feature of the project was its sustainability strategy. Approximately 80% of the transport originally planned by road was transferred to river transport on the Thames. Tunnel segments were delivered by barge from the Chatham precast facility, while excavated material, construction materials and consumables were transported by waterway.

To enable the transport of excavated material by barge—primarily to Wallasea Island, where a new RSPB nature reserve was created—a new 200-metre-long jetty was constructed at Instone, near the main launch shaft. These works also included dredging operations to allow access for 2,000-tonne barges.

During the execution of Contract C305, more than 550 metres of sewer collectors, 145 metres of water supply pipelines, and 15 CCTV monitoring stations for gas pipelines and Thames Water assets were relocated. The relocation of the 145-metre sewer at Victoria Docks represents a world record for this type of operation.
