Calaveras Dam represents one of the most significant dam projects delivered in the State of California over the past three decades. The project involved the replacement of the original dam, which had been in operation since 1925.

The new structure reaches a height of 67 m, with a crest length of 370 m and a base width of 360 m.

Construction of the dam and its spillway required more than 5 million cubic metres of excavation and the placement of 2.7 million cubic metres of embankment material.

The dam has been designed to withstand a magnitude 7.25 seismic event associated with the active Calaveras Fault, located approximately 500 m from the site. Throughout the construction period, continuity of the existing water supply was maintained in accordance with contractual requirements.

In addition, the presence of naturally occurring asbestos required the implementation of strict environmental protocols, which influenced excavation, embankment works, quarry operations and disposal activities.
