The westward expansion of the Centerm Container Terminal, operated by DP World at the Port of Vancouver, was delivered under a design and build contract, with the objective of increasing the terminal’s land area by 15% and strengthening its operational capacity in response to the growing container traffic in Canada.

The project has significantly enhanced cargo handling capacity, improved terminal access, and reduced traffic disruption caused by the presence of two railway lines crossing the port area.

In the first phase, the existing berthing line was extended to a total length of 2,375 ft through the installation of two reinforced concrete caissons. This required the prior demolition of the existing mooring dolphins, as well as dredging works and ground improvement using gravel columns to enhance foundation conditions.

The second phase involved the westward expansion of the terminal, carried out through the construction of a perimeter retaining structure, including sheet piling and land reclamation and consolidation works.

Finally, the terminal was extended towards the east with the construction of an additional perimeter structure. This phase required yard densification and a comprehensive reconfiguration of the terminal, including internal roadways, parking areas, control buildings, reconstruction of office facilities, improved access arrangements, and the upgrading of all associated services.
