The La Esfinge and Reina Sofía breakwaters expand the sheltering capacity and berthing line of the Port of La Luz and Las Palmas through new maritime infrastructure providing more than 2.3 kilometres of new port alignments and creating additional operational areas.

The development combines rubble-mound and vertical caisson breakwaters. Phase II of La Esfinge includes a 330-metre rubble-mound section and a 627-metre vertical section 14 reinforced concrete caissons founded at depths of up to 26 metres. The Reina Sofía extension incorporates 11 prefabricated caissons supported on foundations located at depths of up to 60 metres.

The project stands out for the scale of the marine works and the logistics involved in manufacturing, transporting and installing large concrete caissons. The works also included reclamation areas, service galleries and port facilities required for future terminal operations.
