Runway No. 3 at Charles de Gaulle Airport, forms part of the airport infrastructure expansion works at Paris’s main international airport.
The project involved the full construction of a new runway, incorporating advanced airport pavement solutions aimed at improving structural performance and load bearing capacity.
The works included the execution of a base layer treated with a special road cement known as ROC AS. This solution enabled, for the first time in this context, the use of a high modulus asphalt mix as a structural base layer.
The pavement structure comprises a 6 cm discontinuous asphalt wearing course, a high modulus asphalt base layer with thicknesses ranging from 26 to 30 cm, laid in two courses, and a hydraulically bound gravel sub base with thicknesses between 45 and 56 cm.
