The scope of the works comprised the construction of a new passenger terminal building, whose demolition was excluded from the contract. The project also included the construction of a new air traffic control tower integrated into the terminal complex, while enabling an increase in aircraft apron capacity.
The new terminal building, rectangular in plan, is arranged over a total of nine levels. Levels 0 and 1 are dedicated to passenger operations, while the underground levels accommodate parking areas and airport operational spaces.
Key functional upgrades compared to the former terminal included the construction of two boarding bridges and the installation of a Hold Baggage Inspection System (HBIS), equipped with sorting loops enabling 100% screening of hold baggage in compliance with European and international regulations.
The project also involved the execution of access roads to the terminal via two post tensioned concrete viaducts, as well as major retaining works using micropile walls to ensure the stability of the existing terminal both during construction and in the service phase.
