The Port of Gijón Expansion delivered a major increase in port capacity through the creation of 145 hectares of sheltered waters and extensive new operational areas designed to support logistics, bulk cargo and future port development.

The project included the construction of a new breakwater system comprising the Torres Breakwater, the North Breakwater and a Counter-Breakwater, combining rubble mound and vertical caisson structures to withstand the demanding marine conditions of Spain’s northern coastline.

The development also incorporated a new large-scale quay for port operations and cargo handling, together with substantial reclaimed land areas created to accommodate future logistics and industrial activities.
Due to its scale, material volumes and engineering complexity, the project stands as one of the most significant port infrastructure developments undertaken in Spain, integrating maritime engineering, dredging works, land reclamation and large-scale caisson construction.
