The volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma, which lasted 85 days, caused the complete interruption of the main north–south road connections in the western part of the island due to the intense lava flows. The affected area covered more than 2,965 acres, with an estimated a verage thickness of 12 m and local maximum of up to 70 m, leaving numerous population centers and agricultural holdings in the municipalities of Los Llanos de Aridane, Tazacorte, and El Paso isolated.

In March 2022, the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) declared a state of emergency and ordered the urgent execution of the works required to restore the connection between roads LP-215 and LP-213, in the southeastern sector of the lava flow, thereby re-establishing the main affected mobility corridor.

The works were carried out under conditions of extraordinary technical and operational complexity, as construction took place on recently formed lava flows characterized by extremely high surface temperatures, the presence of toxic gases, highly irregular topography, and lava tubes, all within an emergency framework that required exceptionally short execution periods: 14 months from initial access to the lava flow.

The completed infrastructure consists of a 3.912 km conventional road, designed for a speed of 70 km/h, with a single roadway, one 3.5 m lane per direction, 1.5 m shoulders, and lateral margins of 0.75 m and 3.0 m, intended to accommodate services and facilitate maintenance operations.

Between KP 2+537 and KP 2+780, a 243 m long viaduct was constructed to improve transversal permeability, reduce environmental impact, and allow the passage of the former coastal road and agricultural access routes located at a lower level. The structure is a continuous hyperstatic deck with eight spans, ranging from 24 m to 33 m, and a total deck width of 14 m,comprising 10 m of roadway and 2 m wide sidewalks on each side.

The project incorporated a highly sustainable design approach, prioritizing the use of volcanic aggregates derived from the eruption itself for embankments, concrete production, and pavement layers. The pavement structure was specifically designed to perform under exceptional thermal conditions, achieving an optimal solution in terms of thermal dissipation, insulation, and structural capacity.
