Runway 18R 36L at Madrid Barajas Airport, with a total length of 4,440 m and a width of 75 m, represents a key infrastructure developed as part of the expansion of the airport’s airside operational area.

The project involved the construction of a new runway together with a parallel taxiway of the same length and 51 m in width, as well as rapid exit taxiways, runway connections and links to the existing airport movement area.

The scope also included extensive earthworks for a future aircraft apron, road diversions, relocation of affected services and stream channelling works, executed through structures beneath the runway, roads and associated drainage systems.

From a construction standpoint, the works required major volumes of earthmoving, concrete structures, airfield pavements, asphalt mixtures and aeronautical lighting and signage systems, ensuring the operational safety and performance of the new runway
