The Portugués Dam project, located near the city of Ponce, involved the construction of a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) arch-gravity dam, designed to meet demanding structural and operational requirements.

The dam reaches a height of 219.82 ft and a crest length of 1,230.31 ft, incorporating a ski-jump spillway. The total volume of roller-compacted concrete placed amounts to 379,333 yd3.

The scope of works also included the construction of the crest access road, the intake structure, and a valve house with an integrated control room, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the facility.

The challenging thermal conditions of the site posed a significant constraint for concrete production and placement. To address this, a dedicated cooling system for coarse aggregates was implemented, consisting of a tunnel with cold-water circulation, together with an ice flake production plant.

In addition, and in response to the specific requirements of the project and site conditions, a comprehensive set of auxiliary facilities was designed, installed, and operated. These included an aggregate processing plant, a sand washing plant, a high-speed concrete conveyor belt system, and two concrete batching plants, ensuring continuity, quality, and efficiency throughout execution.
