Chacabuco and Prat Wharves rehabilitation

The rehabilitation and expansion of the Chacabuco and Prat Wharves restored one of Chile’s most important naval and industrial port facilities following the severe damage caused by the 2010 magnitude 8.8 earthquake and tsunami.

Executed under an EPC contract by the consortium formed by DRAGADOS, Comsa and Besalco, the works were undertaken in phases to maintain full operational capacity throughout construction.

The project includes the construction of extensive waterfront infrastructure, such as vertical pile wharves, sheet pile wharves and raked pile wharves, all designed to withstand extreme seismic loads associated with inter plate events of magnitude 8.8.

The works required complex geotechnical solutions—such as gravel columns, deep piling driven to bedrock and structural elements prefabricated off site—to address liquefiable soils and demanding load conditions.

The project also includes the creation of a new port platform exceeding 24.7 acres, a 2,323 ft rock armour breakwater, and dredging of the dock and approach channels to –26 ft.
