The Isabella Lake Dam islocated 34.80 miles northeast of Bakersfield, California, on the Kern River. The original infrastructure, completed in 1953, comprised a main earthfill dam with a height of 185.04 ft, an auxiliary earthfill dam 100.07 ft high, intake and outlet works, and a service spillway located between the two dams.

In 2007, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) imposed operational restrictions on the reservoir due to the need to mitigate significant hydrological, seismic, and internal erosion risks associated with the existing dams and spillway.

The new Isabella Lake project involved a comprehensive intervention, including the reinforcement and raising of both dams, the rehabilitation of the service spillway, and the construction of a new emergency spillway. As a result, the main dam was raised to a height of 201.12 ft, while the auxiliary dam reached 116.14 ft, with crest lengths of 1,686.35 ft and 4,015.75 ft,respectively.

The emergency spillway, locatedbetween the two dams, represented one of the project’s main technical challenges. Its construction required the excavation of more than 2.75 million yd&sup 3;of granitic rock, which was reused both as dam embankment material and as aggregate for concrete production. At its inlet, the spillway features a 12-cycle arched labyrinth weir, with a 1,213.91 ft crest length and a discharge capacity of 384,900 ft3/s.

The Isabella Lake Dam plays a critical role in flood control, irrigation supply, power generation, and recreational use, contributing significantly to regional water security and sustainable development.
