The South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) delivers 40 km of new motorway and forms a key component of British Columbia’s Gateway Program, designed to improve connectivity across the Vancouver metropolitan region
The project is a key element of British Columbia’s “Gateway Program” that intends to improve the road network and solve the traffic congestion problems caused by the increasing population in the metropolitan area of Vancouver. The population has been growing the last 20 years and is expected to continue growing in the coming decades. This project will allow access to rail terminals, Vancouver International Airport and the border crossing between Canada and the USA.
The project includes the design, construction, finance, operation and maintenance (for 24 years) of the SFPR Highway, a 25 mile long highway with two carriageways, two lanes in each direction and a design speed of 50 mph.
The challenges of the project during the design and construction stages were the environmentally sensitive areas, the archaeological areas and the affected population (First Nations) and a variety of geotechnical solutions for soils treatments.
Completed by DRAGADOS and its partners six months ahead of schedule, the motorway opened to traffic in 2013
